The Prefect of Paris, formerly the Prefect of the Seine, is the prefect of the department of the Seine, then of the department of Paris, when the latter was created in 1968 following the reorganization of the Paris region in 1964.
Since the creation of the Île-de-France region in 1977, he has been simultaneously regional prefect. He should not be confused with the prefect of police, responsible for the Paris police headquarters.
