Pioneer Day (In Russian "День пионерии") Is a holiday for children, teenagers, and pedagogues working with children in Young Pioneer age celebrated in the Soviet Union and modern day Russia.[1]

Pioneer Day was celebrated on the 19th of May, on the day the Young Pioneer movement was founded.

The organizers of the holiday were pioneer movements that continue the traditions and methods of work of the pioneer movement. In the Soviet Union, pioneer day was considered amongst the main holidays of Soviet schoolchildren.

History and essence

On May 19th the 2nd All- Russian Komsomol confrence made the desicion to establish pioneer movements nationwide. In honour of this event May 19th was marked as Pionner Day in the USSR.

In Soviet times, on Pioneer Day, in schools "Lenin classes" were being taught. Pioneer gatherings, concerts, competitions, awards for distinguished pioneers, pioneer parades and rallies were also held on Pioneer Day.

In the evening less formal events were also organized, with a traditional "Pioneer Fireplace".

In modern Russia oftentimes on Pioneer Day, in entertainment centers and clubs there are "Pioneer themed" discos and flash mobs.
