The Pandemic Service Medal (Irish: An Bonn Seirbhíse Phaindéimeach) was a proposed military medal that would have been awarded by the Government of Ireland to personnel of the Irish Defence Forces and others for service on Operation FORTITUDE, the Irish Defence Forces' COVID-19 pandemic response operation.

The medal was proposed in late 2021 and early 2022 by a former member of the Defence Forces who campaigned the Irish government unsuccessfully for the institution of this medal. At one stage, according to a February 2022 article in the Leinster Leader this proposal had received backing from the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence, and the Minister for Defence was aware of it.[1] This article made the argument about a number of other countries, including Spain, Bahrain, France and Austria, along with the Irish National Ambulance Service that had received or were receiving pandemic service medals.[2][3][4]
Order of Precedence edit
It is unknown where the medal would have been in the Defence Forces' medallic order of precedence, but if it had have been awarded, likely as a commemorative medal, it would likely have come last in the order of precedence, after the 1916 Centenary Commemorative Medal and the Jadotville Medal and before any United Nations, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation or European Union medal.[5]
