Nukman Zakaria (born 20 June 1960) is an Indonesian civil servant and politician.

Early life edit

Zakaria was born on 20 June 1960 in Kelapapati, a village in Bengkalis, Riau, as the second child and son of the seven children of Zakaria bin Muhammad Amin (1913–2006), an ulama, and his second wife, Siti Zainab binti Kimpal (1935–2014), an actress.[1][2] His father was born in Bangkinang in 1913, while her mother, a Malay descent, was born in Singapore in 1935.[3] Zakaria's parents, were Muhammad Amin (d. 1930s), a cloth trader, and Taraima, a seamstress, who both came from Kuok; they married and had three children, of whom Zakaria was the eldest and later became clothing traders in the market who moved from one village to another along the Riau-West Sumatra road to sell their wares.[3] Zakaria and Zainab were married in 1956 in order to provide a good care for his young children from previous marriage right after his first wife, Mariah binti Ahmad, died from illness in 1955.[citation needed]

Zakaria brothers were Zulkarnain (b. 1957), a civil servant at Riau Provincial Government Agriculture Service in Pekanbaru, and Gamal Abdul Nasir Zakaria (b. 1965), an Islamic education and Arabic lecturer at Universiti Brunei Darussalam.[1] While her younger sisters were Rinie Yuslina Fairuz (1964–2021), a civil servant, Rita Puspa (b. 1967), a civil servant who served as Vice Director of the Bengkalis Regional General Hospital, Nida Suryani (b. 1971), a science teacher at SMP Al-Amin Bengkalis, and Sri Purnama Zakaria (b. 1973), an English teacher at SMA Negeri 2 Bengkalis.[1] He went to Lancang Kuning University majoring in Economy Management and graduated in 2010.[4]

Personal life edit

Zakaria was married to Yuslina binti Zakaria, a junior school teacher, in 1989. They had a daughter, Nurul Fitri Hidayah (b. 18 April 1991), a lawyer. Their marriage lasted until Yuslina's death from diabetes on 14 March 2021.

Career edit

Zakaria started his career as a food crop agricultural employee at Department of Agriculture in Bengkalis from 1991 until retired in 2020.[5][1] On 31 March 2015, he was appointed as general administrator in the financial section at Bengkalis Regency Regional Secretariat.[4]
