Nicholas Edward Mathews (Born June 12th, 1997) is an American football coach and former player. He is currently the Offensive Research Analyst & Assistant Quarterbacks coach at the University of Memphis. He previously was a Defensive Analyst at the University of Arkansas.

Coaching Career

Marshall

Mathews got his coaching start, in 2019, at his alma mater Marshall University. Head Coach Doc Holiday and Offensive Coordinator Tim Cramsey, got Mathews to join the coaching staff following his playing career as an Offensive Quality Control/QB's coach. In 2020, Mathews moved to the defensive side of the ball as an Defensive Graduate Assistant working with the Defensive Backs while pursing a master's degree. In 2021, Charles Huff took over as the new Head Coach for the Thundering Herd and retained Mathews in the same role. Mathews worked with Defensive Coordinator, Lance Guidry and Dominique Bowman in the secondary that season. Mathews received his master's degree from Marshall University in 2022.

Arkansas

From there, Mathews moved to the University of Arkansas as an Defensive Analyst under Head Coach Sam Pittman and Defensive Coordinator Barry Odom. He continued to work with Dominique Bowman, coaching the Defensive Backs. Mathews was with the Razorbacks from 2022-2024.

Memphis

In April 2024, Mathews got back on the offensive side of the ball as an Offensive Research Analyst & Assistant Quarterbacks coach under Head Coach Ryan Silverfield, and joining back up with his old Offensive Coordinator, Tim Cramsey.

Playing Career

High School

Mathews went to Patriot High School in Nokesville, Virginia. In his senior season, Mathews set the state record with 102 receptions, 1600 yards, and 23 touchdowns. After his senior season he made First Team All-Met, and First Team All-State. In 2015, Mathews was inducted into the Northern Virginia Football Hall of Fame.

College

Mathews walked on to Marshall University, and went on to earn a scholarship after his Freshman season. He played slot receiver and punt returner for the Thundering Herd from 2015-2018.

Personal Life

Nick is married to his college sweetheart Savannah Raye Mathews. The couple has one child.
