Metro Prepaid was founded in 2015 to collect electricity payments from tenants on behalf of landlords using prepaid meters or sub-meters.[1]

Company history

edit

In 2015, Metro Prepaid Proprietary Limited[2] was formed with an initial focus on water sub-meters enabling tenants to manage their usage with prepayment tokens.

It was initially founded by Iain Clarke[3] and Simon Tippett in Cape Town, South Africa to manage utilities and water for the properties from the commercial property investment company Jenzi Holdings Proprietary Limited[4]. Later Cape Business Parks Proprietary Limited[5] was created to develop, maintain and provide property management services to Jenzi Holdings.

In 2017 Metro Holdings Limited was formed and initially based in Mauritius to develop Metro Prepaid outside of Africa. Metro Prepaid Limited[1] was incorporated shortly afterwards to focus on the United Kingdom market, selling utility sub meters.

Origins of the Metro Prepaid Brand

edit

The name Metro Prepaid was derived from the Italian word "Metre" when used as a noun. Metro Prepaid describes the business of managing utility usage through prepayment. Utility prepayment has been shown to, through the awareness of usage it allows, reduce energy usage and by extension carbon emissions. The arrows in the Metro Prepaid emblem symbolise the flow of electricity or water.
