Biography and family edit

Merab was born in Tbilisi on March 13, 1971. In 1987-90, he studied at the art college named after Moses Toidze. In 1990-96, he studied at the Tbilisi State Academy of Art, at the faculty of easel graphics. Since then he lives and works in Tbilisi. He created new works in Nepal, Florida in years 2016-18. Currently, he cooperates with art galleries: Studio art gallery (Tbilisi, Georgia), Art Gallery Noblesse (Tbilisi, Georgia), Dokusanat Gallery (Turkey), etc...

In 1992, he married Irma Kusiani, who is also an artist, and they have two children.[1]

The characters created by Merab Gagiladze are often presented as illustrations of a literary work, but through them the artist conveys the problems of the modern world in the style of the Middle Ages.

Technique edit

"My Happiness", a painting by Merab

He graduated from the Faculty of Graphics at the Art Academy. In the early period, he also worked in lithography, although his basic style and artistic thinking have not changed radically, only the expressive form has changed. He works without sketching. With oil paints, he has his own specific technique, he uses several thin layers of paint, using the lacing technique, he gets transparent tones. Gold and silver leaf is often used in the works. [2]

Creative inspiration edit

The artist avoids creating portrait faces of specific people.[3] His characters are the product of the artist's imagination, his idealized types, generalized and allegorical, sometimes even seemingly genderless. It is difficult to assign them to any specific time and space.[3]

Jan van Eyck, Lucas Cranach, Bosch, Rembrandt, Gustav Klimt, the works of the Pre-Raphaelites, Japanese, African or old Georgian art are the source of the artist's inspiration.
