Melbourne University Mountaineering Club
editThe Melbourne University Mountaineering Club (MUMC) is an outdoors club at the University of Melbourne, and one of the oldest adventure clubs within Australia, having been founded in October 1944.
The club currently has over 650 participants, who take part in a number of sports, with the largest being Bushwalking, Climbing, Kayaking and Backcountry skiing, as well as having created the sport of Rogaining. The club is also jointly responsible for the management of the MUMC hut situated on the North-West Spur of Mount Feathertop.
MUMC's current mascot is oxo-man, a reference to the frequent bringing of Oxo cubes on hikes. Oxo-man is depicted as a bushwalker in a traditional raincoat, wearing ill-fitting boots and carrying an ice-axe.
History
editMUMC was founded in October of 1944, at a meeting convened by Niall Brenning, originally starting out as a bushwalking and climbing club for likeminded university students. This list of sports would grow, with ski-touring being added in 1950, paddle sports in 1992, and bikepacking being the most recent addition in 2024. Caving and canyoning would also become official sports, although were largely incoperated under climbing.
