Louis Arnaud is a French banking consultant.[1] He was arrested on charges "propaganda" against the Iranian regime and "undermining the security of the Iranian government" by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during the Mahsa Amini protests on September 28 , 2022.[2]

Arrests edit

Arnaud began his journey with the aim of discovering the cultural diversity of the world. After traveling to Italy, Greece, Turkey, Georgia and Armenia, he reached Iran.[3][4] On September 28 , 2022, Arnaud arrested by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and moved to the Evin prison.[5][6] He was arrested on charges "propaganda" against the Iranian regime and "undermining the security of the Iranian government" during the Mahsa Amini protests.[7][8]

France announced that a court in Iran has sentenced Arnaud, a French citizen, to five years in prison.[9][10] On Wednesday, November 17, 2022, one of the spokespersons of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs called this sentence "unacceptable" and emphasized that this French citizen was deprived of the right to have a lawyer during the proceedings.[11][12] The spokesperson of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs also said that there is no evidence to prove Arnaud's accusations.[13][14]

Reactions edit

Shortly after the release of the statement of the mother of this French prisoner in Iran, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs "strongly" condemned the sentence issued to him.[15][16]

In the statement of the French Foreign Ministry, emphasizing the "unacceptability" of Mr. Arnaud's imprisonment, it is stated: "We demand his immediate release, as well as all the French who have been arbitrarily detained in Iran."[17][18]

Arnaud's support committee held a protest rally in Paris on the September 28, this year on the anniversary of his arrest with the presence of 200 people.[19][20]

An online petition calling for the release of a Arnaud detained in Iran since September has collected more than 100,000 signatures.[21][22]
