Los Cojolites is a Mexican musical group founded in 1995. Their musical genre is son jarocho. They have been nominated twice for the Grammy Awards in the 55th and 58th editions, respectively. They are founders of the Son Jarocho Documentation Center. They were part of the soundtrack for the Oscar-winning film Frida in 2002. They have performed in various venues around the world and also took part in the opening ceremony of the XXII Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz in 2014.
History
editThe group emerged as part of a cultural project aimed at preserving the traditions of southern Veracruz, including the so-called son jarocho: a musical style derived from the blend of pre-Columbian cultures in the region (Olmec and Nahua) with sounds from Spain and Africa.
They began in the municipality of Cosoleacaque with the support of local authorities, where they not only played music but also conducted workshops on the entire local culture. Due to political issues with the Cosoleacaque city council, they decided to relocate to the city of Jáltipan de Morelos, where they finally settled and founded the Son Jarocho Documentation Center.
Once in Jáltipan, they released their first album, "El Conejo," which was later included in the soundtrack of the 2002 film Frida, directed by Julie Taymor. The soundtrack won the Oscar for Best Original Score at the 75th Academy Awards.
In 2008, they released their second production titled "No Tiene Fin," produced by Greg Landau with vocal contributions from Lila Downs.
In 2011, their third album, "Sembrando Flores," was released and was nominated for the 2013 Grammy Awards in the category of Best Regional Mexican Music Album (including Tejano). The album's title track gained great popularity.
With their fourth production, "Zapateando," released in 2014, they were once again nominated in the same category, this time at the 2016 Grammy Awards.
They were part of the opening ceremony of the XXII Central American and Caribbean Games held at the Luis "Pirata" Fuente Stadium in the municipality of Boca del Río, Veracruz. They performed "La Bamba," a representative son of Veracruz and one of the most internationally recognized Mexican songs.
In 2017, they released their album "Rema, Rema," featuring vocal collaboration from Natalia Lafourcade.
