Laboratory mice are named according to the guidelines set by the International Committee on Standardized Genetic Nomenclature for Mice.[1][2] Laboratory inbred strains are strains that have undergone a minimum of 20 consecutive generations of parent x offspring or sister x brother matings and can be traced to a single ancestral pair in a generation at or beyond 20 generations.[3] Each strain designation consists of a combination of capital letters, numbers, or a mix. Following the strain designation, substrains are designated by the name of the parent strain, followed by a forward slash and the substrain symbol, number, and code for the institution or individual generating and maintaining the substrain.
Only strains of laboratory mice that are notable for regular usage or other qualifying features should be included on this list. If no page exists, then the page to be linked to should be created first or a reference provided as to its notability or the entry will probably be removed.
Laboratory stocks are also included on this list, which typically include
