Lemuel Augustus Smith Jr. (August 30, 1904 – March 19, 2001)[1] was a justice of the Supreme Court of Mississippi from 1965 to 1982.[2]

Served in the United States Navy during World War II, achieving the rank of lieutenant commander.
Prosecuting attorney of Marshall County, Mississippi, for 16 years.
Justice John W, Kyle died May 3, 1965. Lemuel A. Smith, Jr., of Holly Springs, namesake son of a former justice, was appointed on May 7 by Governor Paul B. Johnson Jr., namesake son of a former governor. Justice Smith (age 62) was unopposed at the 1966 election to fill the last two years of Kyle's term.[2]
Smith took a leave of absence from the court in April-May, 1982 because of surgery. New Albany attorney Leslie Darden (age 71) was named as acting justice during that illness. After returning to the bench, Smith announced his resignation, effective June 30, 1982.[2]
Born in Mississippi; died in Holly Springs, Marshall, Mississippi, at the age of 96.
