Leland R. Andrews (October 16, 1887 - December 1, 1967) was an American jeweler, oil producer, and politician.

Early Life

Leland Andrews was born on October 16, 1887, in Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania to Levi Obadiah Andrews and Mary Jane Higgins. He had five brothers: Fred, Earl, Raymond, Frank, and G. Clarence.[1][2][3]

Career

On September 1, 1911, Leland and his older brother Frank, a glass artisan, bought a jewelry store in the Masonic Temple Building on North Union Street, Olean, New York from Leon Kelley and named it Andrews Brothers Jewelry.[2] The brothers started acquiring oil properties and on the 4th of April, 1929 Leland and Frank sold their jewelry business to Leo T. Dugan of Staunton, Virginia; formerly of Olean, in order to focus more on their oil properties.[4]

Andrews was a Freemason and Master of the Olean Lodge in 1920.[1][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] He was also a member of the Olean Common Council and held multiple positions in the Olean government including Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Water Commissioner, City Council majority leader, Chairman of the Street Committee, Chairman of the War Price Rationing Board, Chairman of the Market Committee, Member of the Bridge Committee, and Director on the Park Improvement Association.[1][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]

He also held various positions at auto clubs, including Director of the Olean Automobile Club, Vice President of the Cattaraugus County Motor Club, and Chairman of the Road Committee of the Olean Automobile Club.[1][26][27][28][29] Leland was also on the board of directors for First National Bank.[1][30][31][32]

Leland and Frank named their business Andrews Brothers Oil. In the summer of 1943, Leland and Frank sold their property in Bolivar, New York containing 100 acres of land and a 75-acre oil right, to Logan H. Curtis and Thomas C. Curtis of Olean.[33]

Personal Life

At the age of 21, he married the 19-year-old Myrtle Louise Sheffer, daughter of Valentine W. Sheffer and Martha Irvin. Leland and Myrtle had one child, Philip Sheffer Andrews, in 1911.[1] In September of 1939, Philip died in a car accident near Lafayette, Louisiana. Philip was survived by his widow Lenarda Leahy and ten-month-old son.[34][35][36][37]

Death

Leland Andrews died on died on in Rochester, Minnesota on Thursday, November 30, 1967 at the age of 80.[1][38]
