Kirk Robert Maher (born October 6, 1978) is an American former collegiate basketball player and retired Police Officer for the Yonkers Police Department.
Early life edit
Born and raised in Yonkers, New York, Maher is the second of five children born to Bill and Linda Maher. Maher attended Saunders Trades and Technical High School where he played basketball and baseball. He is friends to former CFL player Nealon Green and former MLB second round pick Norm Hutchins.
College career edit
Maher first attended Westchester Community College. While at Westchester, Maher was a two year starter on the mens basketball team under head coach Winston Nicholas. He then attended Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York.[1] Maher in his career averaged 10.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assist.[2] Maher graduated with a bachelors degree in Criminal Justice.
YPD career edit
Maher joined the Yonkers Police Department (YPD) in 2007. He worked as a patrol officer and then in the Yonkers Police Athletic Leauge where he oversaw all activities in the gym. In 2020, Maher along with three other officers were fired by the City Of Yonkers. Mayor Mike Spano and the City Of Yonkers stated that the city is saving money by eliminating officers who have been out for a year to be fired if they are not found to be permanently disabled.[3] This caused a union battle between the city and the Yonkers PBA. The officers were eventually reinstated and able to retire. Maher retired in June of 2022.
