The College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) at Kent State University, is one of the university's twelve academic colleges[5], offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees in various fields having to do with the physical environment, including architecture, interior design, environmental design and construction.[6]
In 2007, Professor Joe Karpinski created the Construction Management after being approached by the CAED Dean at the time. The program started with twelve courses and as of 2023 is up to 30 courses with 260 students. Karpinski also helped to create the school's Construction Management Student Organization, which competes in national competitions.[7][8]
In 2016, construction on the new 117,000 square foot Center of Architecture and Environmental Design, the current home of the CAED program, was completed. The building cost approximately $43 million and was designed by architecture firms Weiss/Manfredi out of New York City and Richard L. Bowen & Associates out of Cleveland, Ohio. The general contracting and construction management of the building was completed by the Gilbane Building Company. The building was awarded a LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council which signifies the building achieved the council's highest standard of green building.[9][10][11]
