He did his schooling from Khalsa School, Amritsar and then completed his graduation from Khalsa College, Amritsar in 1959. Later he went on to pursue B.Tech in Mining Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad and passed out in 1965.

In his early career, Jaswant Singh Gill joined the coal firm of Karam Chand Thapar and Sons. Later he joined Coal India Ltd. in 1973 and retired in March 1998 from the post of Executive Director (Safety and Rescue). Gill passed away on 26 November 2019, following a cardiac arrest.

The Rescue Operation

edit

On 13 November 1989, 65 miners were trapped in Mahabir Colliery of Raniganj Coalfields when an explosion inadvertently disturbed the upper layer of the mine, leading to a sudden inflow of water.

At that time, Jaswant Singh Gill was posted there as Additional Chief Mining Engineer. Gill proposed the concept of drilling a new borehole of 22 inches diameter, fabricating a steel capsule that could carry one person at a time through the borewell hole and pull the trapped miners one by one, using the capsule transportation through the borehole.

The work on borehole digging and the steel capsule fabrication took approximately 72 hours. Jaswant Gill himself went down in the capsule to rescue the miners. By 8:30 am on 16 November, all 65 miners were brought out with the help of the capsule. During the whole course of the capsule operation, Jaswant Singh Gill was in the pit rescuing the workers. He came out after everyone was rescued.[3] [4]
