James Garrott Holmes (August 3, 1883 – May 16, 1969)[1] was a justice of the Supreme Court of Mississippi from 1952 to 1961.[2]
Born in Sidon, Mississippi.[1]
"Son of C. E. Holmes and Katie Bell Holmes. Judge Holmes was a retired State Supreme Court judge. He served in this capacity for 12 years and as a city attorney for 40 years."[1]
"James G. Holmes (age 69) of Yazoo City, appointed by Governor Fielding Wright to one of the three new positions in January 1952, was unopposed" in the election held for that seat later that year.[2]
In the 1960 election, Henry Lee Rodgers challenged Holmes, then 77, noting that if Holmes were re-elected he would be 85 by the end of his term. On June 8, 1960, Rodgers defeated Holmes in the Democratic primary election by 28,918 votes to Holmes's 27,242.[2]
