James Colquhoun (born on October 14, 1981 in Tamworth, New South Wales, Australia) is an Australian entrepreneur, filmmaker, and thought leader known for his work in the fields of health, spirituality, and transformative media. He serves on the board of directors of Gaia, Inc., a global conscious media company where he is also currently CEO.

Colquhoun is the co-founder of Food Matters, an education and production company focused on documentaries about human potential, mindfulness, and holistic well-being. His acclaimed 2008 documentary film "Food Matters" examines the connection between diet and health. Colquhoun's other documentary credits include "Hungry For Change" (2012), "Transcendence: Live Life Beyond the Ordinary" (2018 - 2020), and “Love Over Money” (scheduled for completion in 2024).

Colquhoun also co-founded the online health and wellness subscription streaming business Food Matters TV (FMTV) which he sold to Gaia, Inc. in 2019.[1] Gaia offers the largest online resource of consciousness-expanding videos, with a  library of thousands of critically acclaimed documentaries, inspirational films, and thought-provoking shorts. Gaia’s content is streaming on the web, iOS, Android, Roku, and Amazon Prime.[2]

In addition to his professional work in film and media, Colquhoun is a co-founder of the Food Matters Institute, an online Nutrition Certification and Training Company focused on helping students understand the connection between nutrition and health. Students graduate as certified nutrition consultants accredited by the International Institute for Complementary Therapies (IICT).

He currently serves on the boards of Gaia, Inc., and Food Matters, and is a previous Advisory Board member of AIA Australia.[3] Colquhoun resides in Boulder, Colorado, and has previously resided in Vanuatu, Australia, and Bali.

Early Business/Career

In 1999, Colquhoun attended Australian Mariton College to become a ship’s captain and worked on tankers and container ships, bulk carriers, and high speed passenger ferries, eventually moving up to working on private yachts as a chief officer on board. When his father became ill, Colquhoun turned to studying nutrition, which led him to create the Food Matters documentary.[4]

James Colquhoun met certified nutritionist Laurentine ten Bosch in 2007, who shared similar interests in health and well-being. They decided to collaborate on an informational documentary project which became Food Matters. The Food Matters company launched in 2008, releasing their first documentary film shortly after. The movie examined nutritional science & role of food/diet in health, and featured interviews with doctors & researchers. It gained global success, leading Colquhoun & ten Bosch to grow Food Matters into a wider media brand.[5]

Colquhoun launched a range of digital products like subscription programs and recipe packages. He and Laurentine produced another popular documentary "Hungry for Change" (2012).[6]  Colquhoun has overseen the growth of Food Matters into a leading lifestyle brand & media platform with a large social media following. FMTV was born as a result of the successes of the two documentaries in 2014 and was later sold to Gaia, Inc. in 2019.[1]
