What was the Order of the Shepherds of Bethlehem (OSB)?
Improved Order of the Shepherds and Daughters of Bethlehem fraternal organization in the United States. It was founded in Richmond, Virginia in 1910. It accepted men and women and provided insurance benefits. By 1927 it had chapters in six states and the District of Columbia.[1]Richmond attorney J. Thomas Hewin was a Grand Shepherd in it.[2]
It was led in the 1920s by Ora E. Brown Stokes.[1] Ora Brown was active in the group.[3] Stokes was a civil rights leader.[4]
A chapter met at the St. James Baptist Church in Bealeton, Virginia.[1]
The National Park Service has a certificate from the group.[5]
