Draft:High Island (Maryland)

High island is the tallest island on the Potomac River located across from Lock 6 on the C&O Canal Trail (38.962517, -77.207176). It is visible from both the Maryland and Virginia shorelines of the Potomac River.

High island had residential development and was part of the Brookmont neighborhood until the late 1950s. Stone chimneys and foundations are the only remaining part of the buildings. Glass bottles and metal appliance parts are strewn on the island from the previous development. The only trail that was used to carry supplies to the neighborhood remains but is covered by fallen trees [1].

The island is home to wild turkey, deer, squirrels and mice, similar to the nearby Plummers island [2].

The island is visible at the end of the Brookmont kayak/canoe training course [3].

High island appears in the introduction and credit scene of the movie burn after reading [4]
