George Natembeya, EBS is a Kenyan civil servant who serves as the current Governor of Trans-Nzoia County, having been elected in the August 2022 general elections and assuming office in October 2022.[1]
Early Life
editGeorge Natembeya was born in Trans Nzoia on February 4, 1971.[2][3] His parents were squatters in Endebess, where his father worked for a white settler. George attended the Mother of Apostles Seminary in Eldoret.[4]
Career
editHe joined the civil service at the age of 25 and served in various positions in different parts of Kenya, including Elburgon, Nakuru county, Burnt Forest, Mulot, Narok, and Kaplamai.
Natembeya later became a personal assistant to the late John Michuki, who was the Minister for Security. After four years, he advanced to other roles such as District Officer and District Commissioner in Murang'a, where he played a significant role in suppressing the Mungiki gang.[5]
Prior to his governorship, Natembeya was the Regional Commissioner of the Rift Valley Province, where he managed security challenges in the region. He also led conservation efforts to save the Mau Forest, removing hundreds of illegal dwellers.
He resigned from provincial administration on January 12, 2022, to venture into politics, aiming for the Trans Nzoia Governor seat. He was the first high-ranking official in the government to resign ahead of the deadline for public servants seeking political positions in the general elections that year, in accordance with the Elections Act.[2]
Natembeya pursued his undergraduate degree in Anthropology at the University of Nairobi, underscoring his interest in human societies and cultures. In 1999, he furthered his academic pursuits by attaining a Master's degree in Anthropology from the same institution, demonstrating his dedication to deepening his expertise. Natembeya also attended the Kenya School of Government, where he refined his skills in public administration and governance, preparing him for his role in public service and leadership.
Personal Life
editNatembeya has one wife and three children.[4]. He has previously declared his love for reading and farming, as well as being a lover of traditional African cuisine, specifically traditional vegetables and brown ugali[4]
Leadership Style
editNatembeya has been frequently described as a firm, astute and no-nonsense administrator. His leadership was praised by the county commissioners he worked with for his firm and fair decisions.[6]
