Franklin Mall was a mall in Schaumburg, Illinois, that opened in 1956, and closed in 2006 due to competition from Woodfield Mall. The mall turned into a strip mall in 2011. It currently has Kohl's, Best Buy, Von Maur, Arhaus, JCPenney, and Burlington
History
editThe mall opened in 1956 with Block & Kuhl, Saks, Wieboldt's, Neiman Marcus, and Elise's, which is a discount store similar to TJ Maxx or Marshalls. In 1957, Lord & Taylor would open a store. In 1960, Block & Kuhl actually became Carson Pirie Scott. In 1961, Saks sold a portion of their store to Sears. In 1963, Carson's closed and Elgin-based department store, Joseph Spiess replaced the space in 1964. In 1967, Sears closed but quickly a store similar to Sears called Roger's replaced the space. In 1971, Woodfield Mall would open close, putting serious pressure on Franklin Mall, which caused Neiman Marcus and Saks to close in 1972. In 1974, Roger's goes out of business but both the Saks and Roger's spaces became Younkers in 1975. In 1983, Wieboldt's would close. In 1994, Joseph Spiess closed but Elise's actually got rebranded to JCPenney in 1994. In 2003, Lord & Taylor and Younkers closed, and the mall closed in 2006. In 2011, the mall became a shopping center, with Sports Authority replacing Younkers, Burlington replacing Lord & Taylor, Kohl's replacing Joseph Spiess, Arhaus replacing Neiman Marcus, and Von Maur replacing Wieboldt's. In 2016, Sports Authority goes out of business but got replaced by Best Buy in 2017. The interior of the mall is still standing, but it is abandoned and closed
