Ethan Baker is an American politician currently serving as the Mayor of Troy, Michigan. He has held this position since November 2019, following his election to the city council in 2015.

Early Life and Education

Ethan Baker received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Southern California and his Juris Doctorate from Whittier College School of Law, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He also holds a Master of Public Affairs from the University of Michigan Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.

Career

Before entering politics, Baker worked as an attorney specializing in Elder Law & Estate Planning, Business Law, and Real Estate. His career in law provided him with a solid foundation in understanding municipal and state regulations, which later proved beneficial in his political career.

Political Career

Ethan Baker's political journey began with his election to the Troy City Council in 2015. His campaign focused on improving local infrastructure, enhancing public safety, and fostering economic growth. During his tenure as a council member, he was known for his collaborative approach and dedication to addressing the concerns of Troy residents.

In November 2019, Baker was elected Mayor of Troy. As mayor, he has continued to prioritize economic development, community engagement, and maintaining Troy's status as one of Michigan's premier cities. Under his leadership, the city has seen several new development projects and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for its residents. Ethan has been a principled and dedicated public servant, committed to a robust and growing business environment, along with safe and community-centered neighborhoods for individuals and families. He was re-elected as mayor in November 2023, demonstrating the continued trust and support of the Troy community.

In addition to his role as mayor, Baker serves as Vice-Chair of the Troy Downtown Development Authority, Chair of the Global Troy Advisory Committee, and is a member of the Local Development Finance Authority.

U.S. Commissioner for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission

Baker also holds the position of U.S. Commissioner (Chair) for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission. The Great Lakes Fishery Commission, established in 1955 by the Canadian/U.S. Convention on Great Lakes Fisheries, coordinates fisheries research, controls the invasive sea lamprey, and facilitates cooperative fishery management among state, provincial, tribal, and federal agencies.

The United States Conference of Mayors

In 2024, Baker was nominated and elected to be on the advisory board of the US Conference of Mayors. This prestigious role involves working with mayors from across the country to address key issues facing American cities, including economic development, public safety, and infrastructure improvement.

Baker also serves as a member of the Technology & Innovation standing committee for the US Conference of Mayors, where he collaborates with other city leaders to explore and implement cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions aimed at improving municipal services, enhancing cybersecurity, and fostering smart city initiatives across the nation.

Ethan Baker is actively involved in numerous community initiatives:

  • Board President of the Hills of Charnwood for 12 years and running.
  • Regularly reads to Troy School District Elementary School students.
  • Welcomes all new Troy businesses to the community.

Personal Life

Ethan Baker is married to Bethany, a Marriage and Family Therapist, Art Therapist, and Michigan’s first Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist and Supervisor. She is also the Co-Founder and President of the Michigan Community for Emotionally Focused Therapy. Ethan and Bethany are blessed to have three wonderful children—Arden, Canaan and Aven. The family resides in Troy, Michigan, where they are actively involved in the community.
