Εριέττα Κούρκουλου-Λάτση
Born1993 (age 30–31)

Erietta Kourkoulou-Latsi (Greek: Εριέττα Κούρκουλου-Λάτση; born 1993)[1] is a Greek activist and ethical investor, known for her contributions to animal welfare,[2] children's rights and veganism. She advocates for a world where empathy extends to all living beings.

Early life, family and education edit

Erietta Kourkoulou-Latsi is the daughter of Marianna Latsis[3][4] and Nikos Kourkoulos[5] and the granddaughter of Ioannis "Yiannis" Latsis and Erietta Tsoukala.[6] She has three brothers, Filippos Kourkoulos Latsis, Paris Kasidokostas and Alkis Kourkoulos, and one sister, Melita Kourkoulou. She married Vyron Vasileiadis[7] in 2020. In 2022, she gave birth to a son, Nikos Vasileidis Kourkoulos.

Following her high school education, Kourkoulou-Latsi went on to attend the American College of Greece (Deree) from 2012 to 2017, majoring in Sociology. In 2020 she received a master's degree in Animal Studies from the New York University.[citation needed]

Career edit

Kourkoulou-Latsi has dedicated her professional life to advocating for the ethical treatment of animals and raising awareness about the importance of compassion and responsible stewardship. She strives to create a world where every creature is treated with kindness and respect.[8]

Save a Greek Stray edit

In 2012, at age 15, Kourkoulou-Latsi founded her first NGO, Save a Greek Stray.[9] Acknowledging the staggering number of stray animals in Greece, Save a Greek Stray initially focused on the rescue and re-homing of animals in need.[10] To better serve this purpose, an animal shelter and veterinary clinic were created in the area of Oropos, where the animals are provided with individual accommodation and veterinary care prior to being rehomed.[11]

The organization soon expanded its practices, with the creation of a number of programs, whose common goals include raising public awareness about the issue of stray animals in Greece and what can be done to resolve it, as well as the mutual benefits of the human-animal bond. These include, educational school programs,[12] sterilization programs,[13] and therapy dog programs.[14]

A Promise to Animals edit

In 2020, Kourkoulou-Latsi founded a second NGO, A Promise to Animals.[15] Its mission is to raise awareness about the harms of animal agriculture and the consumption of animal products through education, public outreach and legal advocacy, ultimately encouraging the collective transition to a plant-based diet.[16]

The NGO has conducted two studies on Greek poultry and pig farms,[17][18] campaigned against equine cruelty,[19] put on a photo exhibition in collaboration with Jo-Anne McArthur, in the Greek Metro Stations, regarding animals' exploitation by humans,[20][21] and organized the first Vegan Medical Conference in Greece.[22] The organization has also organized at the office of the European Parliament in Greece, the "Cultivating the Future - Good Practices in Europe" event, showcasing the Danish initiative on producing and promoting plant based food.[23][24]

Holy Llama edit

In 2022, along with her business partner Kellina Dimitriadi, Kourkoulou-Latsi introduced Holy Llama,[25] the first exclusively vegan bakery in Athens. Holy Llama started as a b2b bakery at Immitos.[26] In 2022, its first flagship retail store was launched at Syntagma offering vegan breakfast, brunch, and light lunch.[27]

Business interests edit

Besides her role in the Latsis Family Office legacy businesses, Kourkoulou-Latsi has partaken in a series of ethical investments, both through direct investments in vegan startups, and her participation in specialized venture funds, the majority of which are concerned with the food tech industry.[citation needed]

In 2022 she became a member of the board of The Greek Cancer Society.[28]

Philanthropy edit

In addition to her various business endeavors, Kourkoulou-Latsi engages in philanthropy through two foundations.

Matilda Foundation edit

In 2019, Kourkoulou-Latsi was voted president of the Matilda Foundation,[29] which is dedicated to the protection of children from all forms of abuse, abandonment, neglect and exploitation, as well as the promotion and protection of their fundamental and inalienable rights.[30]

To effectively serve this purpose, the Foundation supports and cooperates closely with public and private non-profit organizations with experience in the field and the ability to intervene in child protection,[31][32] through the implementation programs that will help prevent and overcome the phenomenon of child abuse and/or neglect.[33]

Kind Things Public Benefit Foundation edit

In 2023, [29] founded "Kind Things"[34] Public Benefit Foundation. The foundation's mission encompasses a diverse spectrum of causes, ranging from animal welfare and veganism to supporting children, vulnerable social groups, society, and the environment. Their causes include animal welfare, veganism and sustainability, children's well-being and vulnerable social froups' support, society and community, and the environment.

The Foundation has already supported two important initiatives, the "Female cancer patient reproductive material cryopreservation program "hebe""[35][36] and the "Relief initiatives for those affected by the catastrophic floods in Thessaly".[37]
