Eng Wei Chun (Chinese: 黄伟俊; pinyin: HuángWěiJùn; born 1972) is a Malaysian Chinese businessman and philanthropist[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. He is the co-founder and Managing Director of Orando Holdings Sdn Bhd, a property development company with projects mainly within the Klang Valley.

In 2023, Eng was conferred the rank of Grand Commander (S.M.W) under The Most Distinguished Order of the Territorial Crown by Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong XVI Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah, awarding him the title of ‘Datuk Seri’ for his philanthropic efforts and contributions to the Malaysian economy.[17][18] [19]


EARLY LIFE

Born in 1972, Eng grew up in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.[20] He spent his formative years working at his family’s hardware store, where he spent much of his time mingling with customers who were mostly contractors. Learning of their success, he was inspired to take up a professional qualification and thus began pursuing a quantity surveying diploma. Simultaneously, he worked on improving his English[16, 68] by studying at the British Council, recognizing the importance of this skill in navigating the business world.

Eng was scouted by several publicly listed companies during his final year, eventually beginning his career as a Quantity Surveyor with Syarikat Pembinaan Setia (currently known as SP Setia) upon graduation at the age of 22.

He worked there until the year 2000 when, armed with skills and knowledge of quantity surveying, he started his own construction business at the age of 28.


BUSINESS

JBM Engineering Sdn Bhd

Eng founded JBM Engineering Sdn Bhd in 2000, a construction company specialising in water works. Eng led the company as its Executive Director, eventually landing a contract worth RM 1 Million.

Upon fulfilment of the contract, Eng decided to sell JBM Engineering to a public listed company, deciding to venture into the property development industry.

Orando Holdings Sdn Bhd

In 2002, Eng founded Orando Holdings Sdn Bhd and took on its leadership as Managing Director, with the mission of “Building Homes of Swiss-watch Standard”. In a 2023 interview with The Star, Eng said, “Every project is my child.[21] [22] My team and I try our best to deliver the best results and value to our buyers.”

For Orando Holdings’ inaugural development, the property development company partnered with an Indonesian businessman, the late Atun Susila to build four semi-detached homes in Old Klang Road’s Taman Yarl. This was followed by the development of Sri Angkasa Homes, located off Jalan Puchong in 2007.[23][24]

Next was the development of Vistaria Residensi in 2009, located in Taman Kobena, Cheras, a 21-stories, low-density condominium. Subsequently, they developed Sky Vista Residensi in 2011, a 27-stories lower-density condominium in Taman Bukit Ria, Cheras.[25]

With their portfolio now including two high-rise projects within Cheras in the Klang Valley, Orando Holdings proceeded to launch Vila Vista in 2013, a luxury condominium in Taman Pertama, Cheras.[26][27][28][29][30] At 39 stories, it is currently the tallest residential property in the area.

They also completed Villa Crystal in South Desa Park, Kuala Lumpur in 2017, a 38-storey luxury condominium.

Orando Holdings’ latest completed project is Lavile Kuala Lumpur [31][32][33][34][35][36]a 48-floor leisure development in the commercial district of Taman Maluri, Cheras. It is comprised of 1,278 units of serviced apartments and 35 shop units, along with resort-styled features and amenities.

In terms of activities outside of Malaysia, Orando Holdings has launched Lavile Kuala Lumpur in Hong Kong[37] with the aim of enticing foreign investment. They have also begun ventures toward expanding overseas with their acquisition of Houghwood Golf in the town of St Helens, Merseyside, with plans to build a small hotel there.[38]

PHILANTHROPY

Recognising the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR), Eng actively initiates and participates in charitable activities. Under his direction, Orando Holdings has contributed to a wide variety of charities since 2013.[39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52]

One of his key areas of philanthropic interest is education.[53][54] Speaking to The Star Biz about this, Eng said, “This will give them the ability to survive independently and improve their lives moving forward. So, education is not just a one-off help.” [55]

Eng and Orando Holdings regularly sponsor educational materials such as Step Up School by The Star, as well as access to e-newspapers with the aim of enhancing students’ language skills. They also made donations to educational foundations such as Yayasan Pendidikan Yong Jiu Tsung Wah, as well as donating directly to schools to fund upkeep and renovations.

Additionally, Eng has funded initiatives to promote patriotism amongst young Malaysians. In an interview with The Star Metro about his organisation of a Negaraku short video competition, Eng said, “The young generation is the future leaders of the country. The spirit of patriotism and unity is important to move the country towards greater prosperity.”[56]

To this end, Eng and Orando Holdings have made donations to cultural organisations such as Yayasan Perpatuan Unity Foundation Melayu, Persatuan Hakka Petaling, and more. Most notably, they gifted Malaysian badminton player Datuk Lee Chong Wei with a unit of serviced residence in Lavile KL worth RM1.5mil for his performance at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil‎, as well as presented a cash prize of RM20,000 each to Lee’s two coaches.[57][58][59][60][61]

In the interest of helping the underprivileged, Eng has also made donations to organisations such as MYKASIH Foundation, One Caring Heart Malaysia Association, Celina's Kitchen, and more. Additionally, he regularly contributes to religious organisations serving the community, having funded the 2013 construction of the Tai Kok Wah Si Buddhist Temple in Cheras and made donations to Persatuan Penganut Dhamma Bumi Malaysia, among others.[62][63][64][65][66]


AWARDS

Under Eng’s leadership, Orando Holdings has won several awards as recognition for its achievements in various domains. In 2013, the company was awarded Best Enterprise, Switzerland by the Europe Business Assembly for brand excellence.[67]

Following that, in 2014 Orando Holdings won six more awards, including the European Quality Award by the European Business Assembly (EBA) Oxford, UK, as well as winning two accolades at the Asia Pacific Property Award 2014, namely the Five Star Best Residential High-Rise Development and The Safe Home Award.[68] In the same year, they also took home the Property Excellence Award at the Sin Chew Business Excellence Awards 2014,[69] the Silver Award for Best in CSR at The Star Business Award 2014, and the Best Quality Leadership Award 2014 from the European Society for Quality Research (ESQR).[70] About this, Eng told The Star that he believed it boiled down to Orando’s branding – “us not directly competing with anyone, us going for the niche market and quality with our catchy slogan – “Build houses with Swiss watch quality.”[71]

In 2015, Eng himself was recognized as BrandLaureate Malaysia’s 2014 [72] Property Man of the Year and the BrandLaureate Great Entrepreneur Brand ICON.[73]

Meanwhile, Orando Holdings won BrandLaureate Malaysia’s 2014 SMEs Corporate Branding Award - Real Estate Property,[74] as well as the Property Excellence Award and CSR Excellence Award at the Sin Chew Business Excellence Awards 2014.[75] The company’s latest project at the time, Villa Crystal, also won several accolades including Highly Commended Apartment Malaysia, Five Star Best Interior Design Apartment Malaysia, and Highly Commended Architecture Multiple Residence Malaysia at the Asia Pacific Property Awards 2015.[76]

In 2016, Orando Holdings won the Property Excellence Award for the third year in a row at the Sin Chew Business Excellence Awards 2016[77]. Their latest development, Lavile Kuala Lumpur, also won them the Asia Pacific Property Award for Five Stars Best Leisure Development[78]. In the same year, they were conferred the Queen Victoria Commemorative Medal by the Europe Business Assembly, as well as the Quality Choice Prize 2016 by the European Society for Quality Research (ESQR)[79]

In 2017, Orando Holdings received the Best Marketing Platinum Award and Best CSR Platinum Award at The Star Outstanding Business Awards 2017 [80]. When interviewed about it, Eng credited his unique approach to property, which emphasizes the need to develop properties that will become viable investment tools.
