• Comment: Not much as changed since it was deleted back in 2017 other than it is now in liquidation but that is considered routine coverage so does not contribute to notability. S0091 (talk) 18:34, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

Embark (Embark Trucks Inc.) is an American autonomous truck company headquartered in San Francisco, California. Founded in 2016, by Alex Rodrigues and Brandon Moak, Embark tests and develops highly automated driving technology for semi-trailer trucks. In March 2023 it moved toward liquidation.[1][2] In May 2023 a deal was struck for Applied Intuition to acquire the company.[3]

History edit

Former classmates at the University of Waterloo, Alex Rodrigues and Brandon Moak began developing self-driving vehicles while still in school, including building a self-driving golf cart in Rodrigues' parents' garage on a budget of $10,000.[4][5] In Winter 2016, Rodrigues and Moak joined startup accelerator Y-Combinator as Varden Labs, a startup geared towards deploying autonomous shuttles.[6] They later went on to found Embark with a mission to deploy self-driving trucks, citing both the high volume of commercial vehicles on the highway[7] and industry research on the commercial driver shortage.[8]

Embark's system uses Nvidia GPUs, Velodyne lidar, optical cameras, and radar arrays. Embark does all of its processing on the truck itself, including sensor fusion and route mapping.[7]

In July 2017, it was announced that Embark had raised US $15M in series A funding.[9] At the same time, Embark also announced a formal partnership with Peterbilt Trucks that includes Peterbilt building custom spec trucks in its Denton, TX factory for Embark's fleet.[10]

Embark raised $17.22 million across three rounds of funding.[7]
