Elizabeth Bray (née Elizabeth Trowell; 28 May 1930 – 28 October 2018) was an education researcher, author of non-fiction and book editor.

Background

Elizabeth Trowell was born in Nairobi, Kenya Colony, in 1930 and moved to the Protectorate of Uganda 1935. Her parents were Hubert Carey Trowell, a doctor at Mulago Medical School, and Margaret Trowell, an artist and founder of the School of Art at Makerere University.[1]

From 1949, she read English at Girton College, Cambridge, graduating in 1952. Trowell then completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at University of Bristol in 1953. She received a Master of Arts from the University of Cambridge in 1975.[1]

Elizabeth Trowell married Jeremy Bray, a fellow student at the University of Cambridge who would later become a Member of parliament for the Labour Party (UK), in 1953 and they had four daughters.[2]

Education research and publications

Elizabeth Bray spent the first 25 years of her working life (1953-1978) as a teacher and education organiser focusing on children with special educational needs, immigrant and refugee communities, and adult literacy.[3] In 1978, she turned from teaching to education research. Bray became the Senior Project Worker for the Clydebank Project, funded jointly by the Eec and Strathclyde Regional Council to investigate the transition from school to work.[4][5][6]

Based on this project and her teaching experience, Bray published a number of pieces of education research. The first was The Mini Co Kit, published in 1983 by Longman. The Mini Co Kit aimed at equipping young people with the necessary knowledge and skills to manage their own company.[7] Also in 1983, Bray contributed a chapter titled 'Mini co's in schools' to the book Work Experience and Schools edited by A. G. Watts and published by Heinemann (publisher).[3]

In 1986, Bray co-edited a book titled Assessment: From Principles to Action with Robin Lloyd-Jones published by Macmillan Publishers. Bray also contributed four chapters to this book, which was designed as a guide for classroom teachers on different forms of student assessment.[8]

Other publications

Bray was a recreational sailor[9] and wrote The Discovery of the Hebrides: Voyagers to the Western Isles 1745-1883, a non-fiction book first published by Collins Publishers in 1986 with a second edition appearing in 1996 under Birlinn (publisher).[10][11] Bray would later work with Birinn again to contribute the Forward to a 2006 facsimile of the 19th Century travelog Daniell’s Scotland: A Voyage Round the Coast of Scotland and Adjacent Isles 1815-1822.[12]

In the late 1990s, Bray regularly contributed to the journal A Life in the Day (renamed in 2010 to Mental Health and Social Inclusion) with articles that centred on the welfare system.[13][14][15]

Bray also self-published the autobiography of her husband Jeremy. Jeremy Bray completed a full draft of his autobiography hours before he died in May 2002 and asked Elizabeth Bray to ensure its publication. The book appeared in 2004 under the title Standing on the Shoulders of Giants.[9]

The Papers of Jeremy Bray, Elizabeth Bray's husband, are held at Churchill Archives Centre. Amongst these papers are many of Elizabeth Bray's publications, some of her letters and materials relating to the self-publication of Standing on the Shoulders of Giants.
