Dr. S Narayanaswamy (12 April 1905 – 25 August 1990), popularly known as 'Chitra' Narayanaswamy was a citizen of Madras (now Chennai) in India. He was a well known stockbroker,[1][2] and was one of the founding members and a former President of the Madras Stock Exchange.[3][4]
Dr Narayanaswamy started his career with brokerage firms in Chennai and worked for Maconochie & Co and Dalal & Co[5]. He also served as the Superintendent of Securities at the Travancore National Bank. Post the winding up of Travancore National Bank, Dr. Narayanswamy along with Murugappa Chettiar (of the Murugappa Group) founded Swastik & Co[6] in 1938. In 1946, he founded Chitra & Company,[3] a Chennai based stock broking firm. Dr. Narayanaswamy served as the President of the Madras Stock Exchange[7] for three terms, from 1943 - 1945 representing Swastik & Co and also from 1949 - 1950 representing Chitra & Co.[8]
In addition to his profession as a stockbroker, Dr. Narayanaswamy was deeply involved in the founding of several companies. He was the Chairman of the Seshasayee Group of Industries, and was on the Board of Directors of several companies including Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT), India Cements, Chemplast Sanmar, Seshasayee Paper & Boards,[9] Consolidated Coffee (now Tata Coffee), Lakshmi Mills,[1] Chettinad Cements, High Energy Batteries, Neyveli Ceramics, The Mettur Chemical and Industrial Corp,[10] Investment Trust of India, Aluminium Industries (Alind), Travancore Chemical Manufacturers, Tamil Nadu Chemical Products, Vanavil Dyes and Chemicals, Reed Relays and Electronics, India Forge and Drop Stampings, Central Scientific Supplies Co, among many others.
Narayanaswamy was the President of the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry, President of the Voluntary Health Services, the Children's Club Society,[11] the Brahma Gana Sabha[12][13] , the CP Ramaswamy Aiyar Foundation,[14] the Besant Centenary Trust, Young Men's Indian Association (YMIA)[15][16], Bharat Scouts & Guides, Madras Literary Association, and Madras Library Association among others. The Brahma Gana Sabha has instituted the "Dr. Chitra Narayanaswamy Centenary Trust Award” for talented Carnatic music performers[17][18]. Dr Narayanaswamy was the Vice Chairman of the Madras Kendra of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and a Trustee of Kalakshetra[19]. He also served as a Member of the Tea Board for two terms, and was the Chairman of the managing committee of the Thakkar Bapa Vidyalaya and the Forum of Free Enterprise[20], Madras Branch.
