Early Life and Education

edit

Dr. Naik was born in Chidder village, Kulgam. He belongs to a highly educated family, with all seven of his siblings pursuing higher education at Aligarh Muslim University. He holds two PhDs, one in Geography and another in General Studies, and has also earned a postgraduate diploma in Sociology and Geography from Aligarh Muslim University.[3]

Career

edit

Dr. Naik has been an assistant professor in the Geography department at the Government College for Women in Udhampur since January 2023. Prior to this, he worked at the Government Degree College in Kulgam for six years.[4] During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was active in managing quarantine centers in Kulgam.[5]

Activism

edit

Dr. Naik is widely recognized for his activism against corruption and illegal activities in South Kashmir. He has exposed numerous scams involving fake degrees, forged certificates, and extortion rings. His social media posts have garnered significant attention, leading to the suspension of several government officials.[6] In 2019, he protested against the closure of a key civilian highway in Kashmir, advocating for the rights of local residents to travel freely.[7]

edit

Dr. Naik has faced multiple legal challenges due to his activism. In March 2019, he received a show-cause notice from the Kulgam police superintendent, citing his activities as a cause for surveillance. He has been accused of instigating students against the state administration and sympathizing with local terrorists, allegations that he and his family vehemently deny.[8]

In September 2022, the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court refused to quash an FIR against him, which included charges of promoting separatism and violence. The court cited video clips showing Dr. Naik allegedly encouraging violence and promoting enmity between different communities.[9]

Personal Life

edit

Dr. Naik comes from a family with a strong educational background. His father, Ghulam Mohiudin Naik, is a retired manager of a government-run cooperative market in Anantnag. His younger brother, Abdul Basit, is also an academic, serving as an assistant professor at Kashmir University.[10]
