History edit
The education of the school was founded in 1926 in the Metro Vancouver Area. Grades 1-8 were held at the basement of a church until it was expanded to a separate area with it's own school building, which were run by a total of five teachers and thirty-two students.
In 1947, the New Westminster Adventist Church purchased a one-room school in East Burnaby for DLS, but since it wasn't ready yet, a teacher started classes instead in another church basement located in New Westminster. In January, 1948, classes in that church were moved to the then finished property in East Burnaby and later expanded to offer grades through 9-10.
In 1964, construction began for a new location in Burnaby. In 1965, the East Burnaby location continued teaching until it was sold and combined with the one in New Westminster to make the Deer Lake Seventh-day Adventist School at the newly constructed site. Classes would begin in September of the same year with eighty-five students, four teachers and a principal.
In May, 2015, the school celebrated its 50th anniversary in a weekend homecoming, bringing over five-hundred former students, teachers and friends, along with special greetings from Christy Clark and Anne Kang.
Today, about three-hundred students and forty staff, as well as thirteen Seventh-Day Adventist churches in the Metro Vancouver area, run and support the school.[1]
Sports programs edit
Deer Lake School plays various sports such as basketball, soccer, flag football, volleyball and gymnastics, with some being at junior and senior levels. The team name of Deer Lakes School is called the "Deer Lake Falcons". Sports like flag football and volleyball are hosted by the Canadian Athletic Sports Association, while other sports, like basketball, are hosted by the British Columbia Federation of Independent Schools Association.[1]
Associations edit
Deer Lake School is owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. They are members of the British Columbia Federation of Independent Schools Association (FISA) and the Burnaby Board of Trade Directory and participate in the Greater Vancouver Independent Schools Athletic Association (GVISAA) and the Canadian a sports network for private schools.
Deer Lake School supports charities such as Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Terry Fox Run, Jump Rope For Heart, and Covenant House. Sometimes each year, programs are held for these charities. Students run through Deer Lake Park to raise money for the Terry Fox Run and jump rope to raise money for Jump Rope for Heart through various sponsors and donations from the local community.
In 2019, Grades 11 and 12 participated in Service 2019: Panama, in which they helped the building of a new church, hosted sports programs and more to contribute to the community of Panama.[1]
