Comfort Care Homes provide end-of-life care to terminally ill patients. They work closely with Medicare Hospice Providers but are not hospices in their own right.
The homes' primary mission is to serve patients who have no other place to receive end-of-life care, often people with no family members able to provide care, or the homeless.
Comfort Care Homes do not charge for their services. They depend on contributions and fund raising for their existence.
Mount Carmel House in Hilton, NY, is believed to be the first Comfort Care Home in the United States. It opened in 1984. The movement spread from there and there are now more than 30 Comfort Care Homes in New York State. Homes exist in many other, but not all, states.
The Omega Home Network is a national association of Comfort Care Homes. In New York, there is an association of homes, NY Comfort Care.
