The NCAA Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision crowns a champion through an on-the-field competition. When the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) was created (1998), the top 2 teams played in a National Championship game at the end of the season to crown a champion. In 2014, the College Football Playoff (CFP) was created to include the top 4 teams in an end of year tournament. The schools listed below have been the most successful teams to win a National Championship during this era (1998 - current)[1]. Prior to this current era, the AP Poll, the Coaches Poll, and other polls crowned national champions through a voting process where people could vote different teams the champion based on their opinion. In 2024, the playoffs will expand to 12 teams and involve on campus playoff games in addition to bowl games and a National Championship Game. Since the 1998 season, there have been 13 different FBS national champions[2].
