Christopher J. Stockwell (born Dec. 11, 1975) is an American transgressive author. In addition to transgressive fiction (a genre most simply defined by characters that feel confined by norms and engage in socially unacceptable acts to escape this confinement), Stockwell's writing style also incorporates absurdist and satirical elements. He is also an employment and workers' rights attorney in Seattle.
Early life
editStockwell was born in Seattle and raised in Tacoma, Washington. He is the middle child of five siblings. He dropped out of high school in the 9th grade and was homeless as a teenager and young adult, working in numerous low wage and service sector jobs. Stockwell struggled with alcoholism as an adult, getting sober when he was 26 years old.
Career
editStockwell worked as an EMT in Tacoma in his 20s, returning to school at Seattle Central Community College in 2008. He obtained his bachelor's degree in political science and government from the University of Washington in 2012 and his Juris Doctor from Seattle University School of Law in 2015. That same year, he founded Stockwell Law Firm, an employment rights law firm.
From March 2022 to March 2024, Stockwell worked as an assistant city prosecutor for the City of Seattle. After leaving his position, he reopened Stockwell Law Firm.
In 2023, Stockwell published The Complete Down and Out in Seattle and Tacoma Series,[1] consisting of the three novellas, Sleeping in the Daytime,[2] Courting Mediocrity,[3] and Squatting in the Shadow of an Ant.[4] The series explores the topics of homelessness, drug addiction, and mental illness through the fictional character of Jack [5]and is based in the Pacific Northwest in the 1990s and early 2000s.[6]
In 2024, Stockwell published City Attorney's Office, Book One: Professional Camouflage,[7] the fictional story of Ben, a working class kid who defies the odds and becomes an assistant prosecutor for the City of Seattle.
His life experience as a homeless teenager and recovering alcoholic has greatly influenced his work.[8]
In January 2024, Stockwell was featured on the KIRO News Radio show, the Ross Files with Dave Ross, in a segment titled, Becoming the punk rock prosecutor!
