Charles Eastwick Smith was a businessman, surveyor, botanist, and organizer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

A member of the Society of Friends, he was reportedly cast out for carrying a gun while patrolling to protect Catholics during civil disturbances.[1]

He was a proofreader for various botanists and corresponded with many. A collection of his correspondence remains.[2]

He was the uncle of Franklin Guest Smith.

He worked for iron mills and Reading Railroad until enduring health issues.

Melica smithii is named for him.

He led the Union League of Philadelphia.

The National Portrait Gallery has a painting of him by Matthew Wilson (1814 - 1892).[3]
