BRIX’N MORTAR is a three-piece American Oi!/Hardcore band formed in August 2017 in Salem, Massachusetts, United States. The band was formed by Troy Schoeller, Joey “Riot” Osborne, & Devon Hunt, drawing inspiration from the Hardcore, Oi!, & Rock scenes in Boston, NYC and Europe. The band describes their sound as influenced by bands such as The Bruisers, Slapshot, 4Skins, Perkele, Templars and Terror. Among many many more.

History edit

Before Brix’n Mortar, The members met while living in the Allston (Rock City) Borough of Boston, MA which was described as a musician/student ghetto – known for its numerous bars, night clubs, & underground basement venues. Troy Schoeller sang for Boston based brick wall Oi! band Razors in the Night, who had releases on Contra Records (Germany), Longshot Music, Pirates Press, and 4Subculture Records (Czech). Joey Riot Osborne was founding member of the bands Chanticlear and The McGunks. Devon Hunt was a founding member of the band Sexcrement. All three members have also swung double duty in the reformation of Razors in the night (2021 to present.) Recording newer material and performing live.

Sound edit

Their songs range from an unapologetic assault of aggression and pure rage with "Poison Words" to the melodic sing-a-longs of "Suburban Murders". Brix'n Mortar's urgent brand of hardcore & Oi! acts as a refreshing return to form for those who yearn for the glory days of bands such as The Blitz, Wisdom in Chains, and Sick of it All.

Career edit

Brix'n Mortar released a two song "DEMO" in June of 2018. This release included demo versions of the songs "Side by Side" and "Pangs of Spite". Then in March, 2019 Brix announced their upcoming album and released a two-song single for "Freshcut" & B-Side "Suburban Murders". In August of 2019, the Brix BOi!S released their debut 8 song EP titled "Poison Words", on Horror Business Wreck Chords, (named after the retail Allston, MA Punk store owned and operated by Troy). The release was met with critical acclaim and their song "Suburban Murders" quickly shot up to the Number One slot on the Boston Groupie News Top 10!

During this time, Brix’n Mortar had been performing live in Boston, MA, as well as their new hometown of Salem, MA, & making enough of a buzz to catch the attention of touring bands such as Booze and Glory, Antagonizers ATL, The Iron Roses, Italian Oi! band FAVL, UK Oi! band Grade 2 (to mention a few) – who requested the Brix Boi!s play support slots at their shows, which allowed them to appeal to a greater audience. In addition to the bigger shows, Brix’N Mortar’s crossover sound has enabled them to share the stage with a variety of different bands & musical genres over the years, including all different varieties of Punk, Hardcore, Rock n Roll, and Heavy Metal. In 2019, Brix was invited to perform at the Northeast Oi! Fest in Connecticut, where they got to share the stage with three days of incredible bands and community. Upon returning to MA, Brix’n Mortar had the privilege in performing at the Boston time honored tradition of The Rock n Roll Rumble, making it to semifinals! The experience enhanced & continued to polish the band’s professionalism. Debuting the CD for Poison Words shortly after, Brix’N Mortar played shows all over New England and the Northeast corridor. After performing with Steel toe Solution in Philly, PA the world soon came to a sudden stop as Covid put an end to any live performances for the near future. The pandemic was a setback for the entire world, but the band remained steadfast and used this time to buckle down & write songs for their next record. They also had the rare opportunity to appear live on WMFO, which was recorded and later released as “The Quarantined Sessions”. The band quickly followed up with three singles, “Angels”, “Till My Heart Stops”, & the INXS cover of “Don’t Change” (the Boi!s favorite 80’s song) which were all produced by longtime friend Dean Baltulonis (American Nightmare, Madball, Ten Yard Fight, Etc.) at his Wild Artic Studio. Once the clubs opened up their doors again, Brix’n Mortar spent the next year and a half - playing out, writing new songs, and jumping back into the studio, this time at Boston’s legendary New Alliance Studios, with Producer Kyle Paradis (Oh The Humanity). The recordings wrapped up in late 2022, followed by an appearance on Boston main stay – Sonic Lobotomy TV Show, hosted by Welch Boys guitarist, TJ Welch. In the early days of 2023, Brix’n Mortar signed to European record label, WTF Records and in quick succession, put out the single “People Like You”, (the band’s self-proclaimed murder ballad), and in July, 2023 WTF Records release Brix’n Mortar’s first full length 12” record – ”Something Ain’t Right” (including a limited edition colored vinyl version). References: Brix'n Mortar just released a digital single before the album (Poison Words) soon to be released. We love the B-side called "Suburban Murders" . They defy all expectations and begin with quiet piano. Then the band kicks in. Their is a vocal that combines Troy and Joey Riot - two different singing styles, but somehow they do it. The piano comes in again with the full band midway. This is a band reaching for something new. Way to go guys. And ya, it's on our Top Ten Songs http://bostongroupienews.com/BGNTopTen.htm B4AIzMUfbs
