History edit

In 1889, Martin Boldt began the company as a small carpenter shop in Appleton, Wisconsin[6]. Martin’s sons Arthur, Robert and Oscar (OJ) joined him in the 1910’s when he changed the name to Martin Boldt & Sons.

OJ Boldt took over the business in the 1920’s and renamed it Oscar J Boldt Construction[7]. During World War II, the company became known for contributing to the war effort by making ammunition boxes for the U.S. military[8]

In 1950, Oscar C. Boldt took over as the third-generation CEO[9] and is credited with the company’s growth in the 1960s, 70s and 80s[10]. He retired as CEO in 1998 and worked as Chairman until his death in 2020. Under his leadership, the company expanded into industrial, healthcare and institutional markets[11]

In 1998, Tom Boldt became the fourth-generation CEO[12]. Under his leadership, the firm trademarked and began using the Integrated Lean Project Delivery method[13], and served as a joint venture contractor on two San Francisco hospitals exceeding $2.5 billion for leading owner proponent SutterHealth[14], which were completed in 2018 and 2019. Under Tom Boldt, the company incorporated reading A Sand County Almanac, a book by environmentalist Aldo Leopold, into its employee orientation[15] to focus on land ethics.
