Bhumihar Brahmin

Bhumihar Brahmins are a landowning caste of northeast India who belong to the priestly Brahmin class.[1] The term "Bhumihar" comes from the Sanskrit words "bhūmi" meaning "land" and " meaning "means "भूमिपति", "भूमिवाला", or "land owner".[2] The word first appeared in records of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh in 1865, and the community adopted the term "Bhumihar Brahmin" in the late 19th century to emphasize their claim to belonging to the priestly Brahmin class.

Bhumihar Brahmins are part of the Hindu upper caste. They live in uttar pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and other states.[3]

The Bhumihars follow a subset of the Brahmin rituals, and claim to be "tri-karma" Brahmins. They are a prominent 'Ayachak' brahmin community of East India. Ayachak brahmins gave up priestly duties and took up agriculture for subsistence and bore arms to protect the motherland. They are generally considered the biggest land-owing caste group in the general category.[4]
