Benning Moore Grice (September 16, 1909 – March 25, 1988)[1] was a justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia from 1960 to 1974, and chief justice from 1974 to 1975.
Born in Hawkinsville, Georgia, to Warren Grice and Clara Rumph Grice.[1]
Grice "served two terms in the Legislature from Bibb County from 1938 to 1942.[2]
He was "elected to the state supreme court in 1960 and served consecutive terms until his retirement in 1975"; "elected chief justice by the other jurists in 1974".[1]
Grice graduated from Mercer University in 1931 and received his law degree from Mercer in 1933. During World War II he served in the U.S. Naval Reserves, reaching the rank of lieutenant commander and participating in the first naval air assaults on Japan and again in the final air assaults. He practiced law in Macon and served two terms as a state legislator before being elected to the state Supreme Court in 1960.[1]
Personal life and death edit
Married Mary Calhoun Grice with whom he had two sons and a daughter.[1] He died of heart failure in his sleep at his home in Macon, Georgia, at the age of 78.[1]
