Bateel International LLC (Arabic: بتيل, Batīl) commonly known as Bateel is a Saudi date and chocolate manufacturer founded in 1992. It currently operates in the entire Gulf region, Asia, Africa and Europe. Since 2016, Bateel operated two locations in the United States, most recently in Houston, Texas.[1]

History edit

In 1989, the brand was launched by Dr. Ziad Al Sudairi[2][3] and Ata Amar, who wanted to create a brand to market dates as a luxury product, similar to Swiss confectionary shops. They opened the first shop in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia[4] and shortly thereafter the products were expanded into the field of chocolate and fine foods.[5] In 1992, they opened in the Bur Juman Centre, in the UAE and quickly expanded, adding another 15 retail locations.[6]

In 2007, they launched a café concept, and started to expand internationally. In 2013, the brand opened locations in Russia and Turkey and additonal café locations in the UAE, Oman and Saudi Arabia. In 2016, they expanded to the United States, most recently opening a store in Houston, Texas. The locations closed in 2023.[7] The company is currently owned and controlled by Ziad Al Sudairi and L Catterton.[8]

Operations edit

Bateel has manufacturing facilities (chocolate and biscuits) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. They buy dates from Saudi supplier Al Ghat.[9] Finished products such as dates in combination with chocolate are mostly fabricated for Bateel with suppliers in Italy and France. The company is in the premium segment and sells its product worldwide at retail and café locations as well as online. There are also retail partners such as Harrods and Selfridges (UK).[10]
