Mwape released he’s first song, titled Bad Bitches[1], in 2020 and it was not received well by his audience that said it was poorly written and produced, which lead to people making memes about him and not taking his music seriously. The rapper then went to university that same year, were he acquired a new audience and released his second song Grind[2], which was highly accepted by his audience and redeemed his reputation as a rapper. 4 more songs were released before the rapper thought of changing his sound to suit his current environment if he ever wanted to blow and get millions of views, it was at this time that he started listening to Afrobeats and Amapiano music to get ideas on how to successfully switch to the local taste in music.

Multiple songs were listened to and he finally matched his flow to Amapiano music but wasn’t sure about how it would perform until he heard Water[3] by Tyla, which encouraged him to record Buss It[4] on an Amapiano beat in 2024 and it eventually accumulated over 16000 total views on Boomplay[5], the rapper then officially adopted African instrumentals for he’s music.

Early life

edit

Mwape was born and raised in the Copperbelt where he was exposed to a lot of music as the province is known to be the birth place of most of Zambia’s main stream artists. Even though, he was never influenced by the high exposure to music, he developed a love for sports, which is also something the Copperbelt is known for. He tried out for as many types of sports as possible, including high jump, long jump, soccer and track, until he discovered that track was his best fit. He began racing as a sprinter and became one of the fastest pupils at his primary school Light of Hope Private Basic School.

After a few years of racing, Mwape and his friends got together and had a conversation about what careers to pursue after school because neither one of them was planning on getting a job in the tough Zambian economy. The rapper suggested racing was too difficult to maintain because glory only came to the fastest and the only alternative was becoming a musician as the music industry was capable of sustaining multiple veterans, but even that was farfetched as the music industry was small and unstable.

He then went to David Kaunda Technical High School in 2015, were he continued racing until he eventually became the fastest and started thinking about a career path more seriously. It was at this time that he was introduced to Hip-Hop/Rap music that was played during entertainment at he’s school, one of which was Hot N*gga by Bobby Shmurda. The rapper developed an interest in Tyga’s music later on, and began singing along to he’s songs, people thought he was good and encouraged him to continue practicing rapping until he adopted it as a potential career path.

Artist name

edit

Whilst in high school, he had trouble with creating an artist name, he had thought of many names that were rejected by he’s friends whom he had consulted on the matter. One afternoon when he was listening to Sicko Mode by Travis Scott, and dancing as Drake and Travis Scott did in the video, he’s friends teased him saying he was in Astroworld and started calling him Astro as they thought it would be a good stage name for the rapper. He gladly accepted the name until he discovered a Korean band named ASTRO, he thought of other words that would go with the name Astro and added Super-fly to make Astro Super-fly.
