Asim Ali Akhund (Sindhi: عاصم علي آخوند; born 1975) was a Pakistani left-wing political worker, and Marxist progressive writer and activist of Sindh, popularly known as Comrade Asim.[1]
Early life and education
editAsim was born in Hyderabad, Sindh to Liaquat Ali Siddiqui and the Sindhi Folk Singer Zeenat Siddiqui. After graduating from the University of Sindh, Asim did his Masters at Moscow State University. He was a brilliant writer in English, Sindhi and Russian.[1][2][3][4]
Career
editAsim started his career as a Socialist writer and activist. He was a well-known figure among political activists, writers and journalists and university folks in Hyderabad and Sindh in general. He was teaching Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy, University of Sindh, Jamshoro.[2][5]
The Seminar Library of department of Philosophy of Sindh University Syndicate's faculty is named after him.[6]
Politics
editAsim besides teaching was working with the Labour Party of Pakistan, prior to that he was associated with a left-wing party. He was a student of Jawaid Bhutto, the Former Head of the Philosophy Department at the University of Sindh. He was also a disciple of Ibrahim Joyo.[2] Asim was a member of the National Committee of the LPP and youth and cultural secretary as well, Comrade Asim was previously a leading member of Communist Party Pakistan – he left them for ideological reasons to join Labour Party Pakistan three years earlier. Asim was an elected member National Committee LPP at the Fourth Congress in December 2007 and an elected as member National Executive Committee and national Youth Secretary of LPP, LPP Sindh developed tremendously in ideological clarity and organization after him joining the party. He took part actively in the Lawyer's Movement and fought the government of Pervez Musharraf[5]
Magazine Adarsh
editBesides his political activities he started the first serious bimonthly magazine in Sindhi which focused on literature and political issues along with university colleagues, magazine called “Adarsh” published some excellent research-based articles, A thing rare to find in post-1990s literary and political discourses in Sindhi language.[2][1][5] A compilation of his articles, editorials, interviews and translations was (posthumously) published as 'Azadi Jo Fikr' (Thoughts of Freedom).[4]
Time in Russia
editAsim travelled to Russia for doing Masters at Moscow State University. He was a brilliant writer in the Russian Language.[1] During his time in Russia, he also married a Tuvan and had 2 sons from her and 1 daughter in Russia.
Death
editAsim had undergone cardiac surgery which developed further complications. He had plans to go for further education in Germany, but died on September 3, 2008, due to these complications. He left behind a widow, and his 3 children in Russia.[1]
