Arachnophobia- ArachnophobiaLinks to an external site.
Background:
Arachnophobia is a phobia of spiders and arachnids. This phobia is just straight about spiders and arachnids and no other animals or insects. This phobia can cause severe stress and discomfort in someone's life and in the time they were to see an arachnid or spider. Some of these symptoms can include anxiety, stress, and even physical sickness from being so scared of what you are seeing. A reaction of arachnophobia doesn't even have to come from seeing a spider it can be from the thought of them as well.
Spiders:
Wolf Spiders
Tarantulas
Jumping spiders
These spiders that are listed are some of the spiders that cause the worst fear in humans. These fears are real and can affect anyone at any time.
Signs that you may have Arachnophobia:
· Sweating or shaking.
· Tightness in your chest or rapid heartbeat.
· Trouble breathing or breathing fast.
· Chills or flushing (red, hot face).
· A choking feeling.
· Upset stomach or feeling “butterflies” in your stomach.
· Dizziness, feeling faint or lightheaded.
· Dry mouth.
· Crying, tantrums, freezing or clinging (symptoms of a specific phobia in children, although adults can experience these symptoms too.
Treatment:
Cognitive Behavior therapy, is where you talk through your fear with a counselor and your concerns. Mainly people with this phobia tend to avoid their fears instead of facing them. Trying to stay calm is another good way to face it, calm breathing instead of speeding it up will help you a lot from an anxiety attack.
· Discuss your symptoms and describe how you feel.
· Explore your phobia more deeply to gain insight into how to respond.
· Learn how to recognize, reevaluate and change your thinking.
· Use problem-solving skills to learn how to cope.
· Face your phobia instead of avoiding it.
· Learn how to keep your mind and body calm
Overall, this fear is real and one that takes a lot of time and effort to get over. Some may never fully get over arachnophobia and some get over it.
