Annette Denise Harris (born August 1, 1982) is an African-American author of children's books. Her first book, Mommy, Can You Teach Me About Money, was published in 2023. Her first book started the Mommy, Can You Teach Me series of books that are aimed at educating children and teenagers about important financial literacy topics.
Early life and education
editHarris was born in Augusta, Georgia, on August 1, 1982. As a child she lived in Waynesboro, Georgia. She later moved to Tampa, Florida after her mother joined the military. During her mother's military career she moved to Panama City, Panama with her mother and sisters until her mother returned to Georgia after leaving the military. After graduating from Burke County High School Harris joined the military in 2001.
Harris has a diverse education history. She attended Columbia College and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Multi-/Interdisciplinary Studies in 2003. Harris continued her studies at Webster University and obtained a Master of Arts in Human Resources Management in 2008. Harris later pursued another Master of Arts degree, this time in Management and Leadership, at Liberty University in 2011. She further pursued her education at Liberty University, where she earned an Associate of Arts degree in Religion in 2014. Harris also earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Finance and Accounting at Liberty University between 2010 and 2015. Harris culminating degree was earned from Florida State University where she earned a Juris Master degree in Legal Compliance and HR Risk Management.
Career
editU.S. Army career: 2001 - 2008
editHarris began her career serving in the United States Army in the logistics field 2001. She completed tours overseas during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001 and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. While serving in the military, she met Dweise Harris, a U.S. Army soldier, whom she married in 2005. They had their first child together in 2005. Harris exited the military in 2008.
Human resources career: 2008 - Present
editHarris began her career in human resources in 2008 after exiting the military. In addition to her full-time job in human resources, Harris currently serves as an Adjunct Instructor at Southern New Hampshire University.
Financial Counseling career: 2021 - Present
editHarris began her financial coaching firm during 2021 at the height of the COVID pandemic in an effort to address the financial crisis affecting families and to enhance financial literacy within the Jacksonville, Florida community. Harris's work in the financial services industry inspired her to write her children's financial literacy books.
Personal Life
editHarris had her first child, Dontavious, in 2000. While serving in the military, she met Dweise Harris, whom she married in 2005. She took his last name and became known as Annette Harris. She was pregnant with their child Destiny while Dweise completed a second tour in Iraq in 2005.
