Andreas Grabner (born August 13, 1979) is an Austrian software engineer, developer advocate, CNCF Ambassador, and speaker known for his work around DevOps, SRE, observability, platform engineering, and open source.
Early life and education edit
Grabner was born and grew up in Gallneukirchen, Austria. He attended the HTL, which is a high school with a focus on software engineering, in Leonding, where he graduated in 1998. In his early twenties, he earned his bachelor's degree from a remote program at the University of Derby, UK.
Career edit
Grabner started as a software engineer for Fabasoft in 1999. After two years, he followed a colleague to Segue Software ─ which later became Borland, then Micro Focus, which is now OpenText. At Segue, he started out as a software quality engineer, learning the trades of software testing. After six months, he transitioned back to engineering, contributing to the load-testing product Silk Performer.
Grabner soon realized that while developing software was his passion, he was also passionate about teaching people how to best use the software they developed. This resulted in Grabner creating more training content and delivering training classes in Europe and the United States.
In 2004, he took the chance of an inter-company transfer to Boston, MA, which lasted for one year. Back in Linz, he led the development team in modernizing the functional testing tool Silk Test while finding time to educate users through training classes.[1]
In 2008, Grabner followed some of his former colleagues from Segue to Dynatrace. He was hired to move back to Boston to support the sales and marketing team as a product specialist and evangelist in the field of application performance monitoring. Grabner continues to work at Dynatrace. Overall, he spent about 8 years in Boston, but is working out of Linz, Austria now.[2]
Open source and developer advocacy edit
Grabner has continued to advocate for various relevant topics in the observability, open source, DevOps, site reliability engineering, and platform engineering space. He has been a frequent speaker at global industry and open-source conferences over the years.
In 2016, Grabner launched the technology podcast PurePerformance[3] with his colleague Brian Wilson. Since its launch, they’ve published a new episode every other week discussing topics relevant for the global IT community.
In 2023, he was appointed a CNCF Ambassador[4], representing and helping to grow the cloud-native community.
