Amethyst Radiotherapy UK is a private healthcare provider offering stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) through Gamma Knife technology for both NHS and private patients in the United Kingdom.
The organisation’s headquarters is located at 42-43 Queen Square in London..[1]. It operates two Gamma Knife treatment centres: the Queen Square Radiosurgery Centre at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, University College London Hospitals UCLH, and the Thornbury Radiosurgery Centre at Thornbury Hospital, Sheffield [2].
Additionally, in partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust, QSRC provides SRS treatment for paediatric patients at The Children Gamma Knife Centre [3].
History edit
In March 2020, Amethyst Radiotherapy UK, a part of the Amethyst Radiotherapy Group, entered the UK healthcare sector through the acquisition of Medical Limited Solutions (MESL), which operated two Radiosurgery Centres in London and Sheffield [4] [5].
After the acquisition, Amethyst maintained its procurement contract with the National Health Service, and collaboration with University College London Hospitals’ NHS Foundation Trust, and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust [6].
Services edit
Amethyst Radiotherapy UK provides stereotactic radiosurgery in the form of Gamma Knife.
Gamma Knife edit
The Elekta Leksell Gamma Knife, developed in 1967 by Lars Leksell, Ladislau Steiner, and Börje Larsson, is a precise and non-invasive form of radiation therapy [7]. It utilizes up to 192 focused beams of radiation to target specific areas with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue [8]. This form of treatment is used for addressing metastatic brain tumours, benign brain tumours, neurovascular conditions and functional disorders [9] [10].
