Algert is a ghost town located in Cochise County, Arizona. Algert began in 1882 when Blue Canyon Trading Post was opened by Jonathan P. Williams, who was an unsuccessful prospector turned trader. In 1889, the Buearu of Indian Affairs took over the post, and started an agency and a school in 1900. C.H. Algert, a trader, built an extension on the government buildings, including the US Post Office that opened in 1900, which he had named after him. C.H. Algert eventually abandoned his work and BIA moved all its operations, including the school, to Tuba City, and the Post Office closed by 1903. Hubert Richardson took over the town, the Post and other buildings, but he ceased operations in 1921. The walls of the school buildings and Post are the only structures that remain.[1]
