Alan Edward Williams is a British composer and writer, known for his significant contributions to contemporary music and culture. Born in Manchester, UK, he studied music at the University of Edinburgh as an undergraduate, before pursuing postgraduate studies at both the University of Manchester and the Liszt Academy in Budapest. He was taught by Nigel Osborne in Edinburgh, Geoff Poole and John Casken in Manchester, and in Budapest, by János Vajda. In 2000, he obtained his Ph.D. in composition from the University of Manchester.

Williams has wide-ranging skills as a composer, and his work often combines styles such as 20th century modernism with jazz and other popular genres, reflecting his eclectic activities as composer, improvising guitarist, accordionist, and choral trainer. His music has been featured by world-renowned ensembles such as the BBC Philharmonic [1], the BBC Singers [2], MDR Radio Choir (Leipzig) [3], the Philharmonia [4], United Instruments of Lucilin [5] and Psappha [6]. His compositions have been broadcast on national radio in several countries, including BBC Radio 3, MDR (Germany), Bartók Rádió (Hungary) [7], and LRT Klasika (Lithuania) [8].

Among his most notable achievements is the creation of the 'scientific' oratorio titled Wonder, a collaboration with Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics, which was performed by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Singers, and Salford Choral Society in 2009 [9].

Fluent in Hungarian, Williams translated and set to music several poems by the prominent Hungarian poet and writer, Sándor Weöres, songs which were performed by celebrated mezzo-soprano, Katalin Károlyi with Tim Williams on percussion in 2022 as Weöres Egyenletek (Weöres Equations)[10].

Williams is also recognised for his innovative work in participation with community groups, such as the immersive, multi-disciplinary piece Healing Tales, developed in collaboration with staff from Bolton NHS Trust. This groundbreaking production, exploring the impact of COVID-19 on NHS staff, combined oral histories, live animation along with new music, and was performed in Salford in 2023 [11].

Williams also holds the distinction of being the composer of the "world's first Northern Opera," The Arsonists [12]. This opera, featuring authentic Northern English accents, was premiered by Heritage Opera and an ensemble from the BBC Philharmonic. The libretto for The Arsonists was written by poet Ian McMillan.

A long-standing collaboration with poet and playwright Philip Goulding led to a choral cycle in 2008, Divers Winged Creatures, a prizewinning piece in the MDR Radio Choir’s International Competition, the 2013 opera, Stefan and Lotte in Paradise [13], and numerous songs for the concert hall and the theatre in Goulding’s adaptations and original work [14].

Williams is Professor of Collaborative Composition at the University of Salford.
