Adam Hyland is a British disability activist and entrepreneur. He was named in the Shaw Trust Power 100 in the Digital and Tech category in 2023.[1] Hyland co-founded Diversity and Ability in 2011 alongside Atif Choudhury and Giedre Paludneviciute.

Early Life and Education edit

Hyland was born in 1984 in Croydon, South London, UK. He has lived experience of Cerebral Palsy from birth and discovered he was neurodiverse (Dyslexic) at university. He won the Whitbread Young Sport Achiever of the year.

Hyland attended the University of Bournemouth and studied for three years, In 2007 gaining 1st Class a BSc (Hons) in Internet Communication Systems.[2] He was also awarded the Best Design, Engineering Student Award and the Vice Chancellors award.

Hyland was President of the University of Bournemouth Students Union in 2007[3] before being elected for two years working for the NUS as the National Disabled Students Officer. [4]

From 2008 until 2014, Hyland was part of the Disabled Students’ Allowance Quality Assurance Group, helping to set the standard for Disabled Students’ Allowance as well as the Student Loans Company, Assistive Technology Stakeholder group.

Hyland was on the British Assistive Technology Association (BATA) council for 4 years.

Hyland previously gave evidence to a UK Government Commission on barriers to employment for disabled people.[5]

In 2020 he became a certified instructor for both Mental Health First Aid England and i-ACT Mental Health courses.

In 2017 he sat on the advisory board of the Global Disability Innovation Hub which was tasked with promoting innovation for disabled people across the globe.[6]

In 2020 Hyland, along with his colleagues, were recognised for their work in the inclusive recruitment field by winning the RIDI (Recruitment Industry Disability Initiative) Awards for Disability Specialist and Overall Impact 2020.[7]

In 2019 Adam became an Advisor to NADP (National Association of Disability Practitioners).[8]
