The 2023 North Kerry Senior Football Championship was the 97th edition of The Bernard O’Callaghan Memorial North Kerry Senior Football Championship . All 14 clubs eligible to compete entered the Championship. The draw for the First Round took place on September 8th at McMunns Bar and Restaurant, Ballybunion, the main sponsors of the competition. 6 First Round ties were drawn while Ballydonoghue and Tarbert received byes to the Quarter-Finals.[1]

Format edit

The Championship was played on a straight knock-out basis with an open draw for each Round. For Round 1 teams drawn out first for each match played at home while for all subsequent Rounds, matches were played at neutral venues. Extra-time was played for all matches which finished level in Round 1 and the Quarter-Finals, while for the Semi-Finals and Final, games which finished level went to a replay.

Summary edit

The Championship got under way on Saturday, October 14th as Ballyduff entertained St. Senan’s, the visitors being victorious by 3 points.[2] The following day Finuge were no match for Beale as the visitors ran out 14-point winners.[3] 3 more First Round matches were played the following weekend. Moyvane hosted rivals Duagh and eked out a 2-point win with a last-minute goal,[4] Castleisland Desmonds had far too much for their hosts Brosna winning by 9 points,[5] while Knocknagoshel had 7 points to spare at home to Ballylongford.[6] The last First Round tie between Listowel Emmets and Asdee was postponed,[7] and when it was eventually re-fixed, Asdee were unable to field a team, so Emmets received a walkover.

The first Quarter-Final saw Ballydonoghue enter the Championship and they had a very comfortable 7-point win over Knocknagoshel in Moyvane.[8] The other 3 ties were much tighter. Listowel Emmets, fresh from their victory in the Kerry Premier Junior Football Championship Final[9] went to extra-time against St. Senan’s who finished the stronger winning an unlikely victory.[10] Beale caused the shock of the Round when they defeated Championship favourites Castleisland Desmonds by a solitary point in Knocknagoshel.[11] The following weekend neighbours Tarbert and Moyvane played out a thriller in Ballylongford with the Shannonsiders emerging victorious by a single point after extra-time.[12]

The Semi-Final pairings saw Beale up against neighbours and great rivals Ballydonoghue while Tarbert faced St. Senan’s. Beale met Ballydonoghue in Ballyduff on November 19th and a tit-for-tat battle ended in a draw.[13] The replay 6 days later proved just as close. Beale led by 3 points at the interval but an early second half goal helped to send Ballydonoghue to the Final with a 2-point victory.[14] In the other Semi-Final played in Duagh, Tarbert led St. Senan’s by a point at half-time but struggled to score in the second half as Senan’s eased to a 4-point win.[15]

The Final, the first to be played in Ballyduff took place on Sunday, December 10th. It was the third time Ballydonoghue and St. Senan’s met in the North Kerry decider with each having 1 victory in the previous Finals. The match was played in wet and windy conditions with Ballydonoghue getting off to a blistering start scoring 1-03 without reply in the opening 13 minutes. St. Senan’s responded well however and scored 1-02 to trail by a point at the break. An early second half point brought St. Senan’s level before Ballydonoghue went on a scoring spree, adding 3 points and another goal to lead by 6. St. Senan’s rallied late on but in the end could only halve the deficit as Ballydonoghue held on to clinch their 10th title.[16]
