The 2021-22 Under-18 League 2, or Under-18s Professional Development League 2 as it is sometimes referred to, is the eighth campaign of post-EPPP Under-18 football's second tier, designed for those academies with Category 2 status. The league is split regionally into north and south divisions, with each team facing opponents in their own region twice both home and away and opponents in the other region once home or away resulting in the North Division playing 23 games, while the South Division played 24 games. The sides finishing in the top two positions in both regions at the end of the season will progress to a knockout stage to determine the overall league champion. 18 teams competed this season. Wigan Athletic U18s are the defending national champions. Birmingham City U18s[3] graduated to Category One alongside Nottingham Forest U18s[4] . Peterborough United U18s joined as a Category 2 Academy[5] joining the North Division.

The EFL Youth Alliance also known as League 3 is run by the Football League under the auspices of the Football League Youth Alliance. 44 teams competed this season, one fewer than the previous season. Notts County U18s and Yeovil Town U18s did not return as they lost their EPPP License. For clubs that get relegated to the National League, they have two years to gain promotion back to the EFL. Otherwise, they lose their license with the League. Peterborough United U18s left the league during the summer after last season because they promoted their academy to Category 2 to play in the U18 Professional Development League 2[6]. Harrogate Town U18s, and Sutton United U18s joined the league as their first teams were promoted to the Football League. Alongside Merit Leagues one and two the Northeast Division played their season with a merit phase as well although the games were the same as the regular season with the top 5 going into the Championship Round while the bottom 5 do the lower round with 4 extra games added to the end of the regular season phase of the season.
